The second tutorial in a series on using Digidesign Pro Tools Window Configurations. This time, you’re going to learn how to use the Mix Window Display Settings property.

Tutorial: Mix Window Display Settings Property

Step 1

In a new Pro Tools session, create some new tracks.

If you’re continuing from the previous tutorial as I am, you should already have a session made of 24 mono audio tracks and a single Stereo Master fader.

In a new Pro Tools session, create some new tracks

Step 2: Make sure the Mix Window is displayed.

Go to Window → Select Mix

Go to Window → Select Mix

Go to View → Mix Window, and select All. This will bring all the available Mix Window rows – Inserts, Sends, Comments, etc – into view.

Go to View → Mix Window, and select All

Here’s what my Mix Window looks like. Yours should look similar.

Your Mix Window should now look something like this.

Step 5: Create a New Window Configuration.

Go to Window → Select ConfigurationsNew Window Configuration…

Step 6: Enter values for the New Configuration.

In the New Window Configuration dialog, Select the Display Settings property.

Make sure that Mix Window Display Settings is selected from the pop-up menu beside Display Settings.

Type in a Name and any Comments you want to add, → Press OK.

Step 7: Selecting Narrow Mix Window

We’re going to make some changes to the Mix Window before saving a second Window Configuration.

Go to View → Select Narrow Mix.

Step 8: Remove Sends F-J

Pro Tools 7.4 has ten Sends. But sometimes you just don’t need all of them.

Hide Sends F-J by going to View → Mix Window → Select Sends F-J

Step 9: Hide the Instruments row

Do the same thing with Instruments. View menu → Mix Window → Instruments

The Narrow Mixer should look something like this

Step 11: Create another New Window Configuration

Go to Window menu → Select ConfigurationsNew Window Configuration…

Step 12: Enter in values for the new Configuration.

In the New Window Configurations dialog → Select the Display Settings property → Make sure Mix Window Display Settings is selected from the pop-up menu beside Display Settings.

(It should do this by default whenever you’re in the Mix Window.).

Give it a name, add comments, and Press OK.

Step 13: Using the new Configurations.

To recall one of the two new configurations,

Go to Window menu → Select a configuration from the Configurations sub-menu.

Step 14: Use the Window Configurations Keyboard shortcut

On the numeric keypad, Press Period (.) → the number of the Window Configuration (1–99) →Asterisk (*).

Which Mix Window Settings Can Be Stored?

Here is a list of display settings that can be saved and recalled in the Mix Window using the Display Settings property:

  • Width of the Track List and Group List
  • Height of the Track List
  • What track rows are shown (such as Inserts, Sends, or Comments)
  • Narrow or Wide Mixer view
